Social Strategy Β· October 2026

Two Jobs, Two Formats

Reels find people who don't follow you. Carousels convince the ones who do. October is the first month you run both on purpose.

This month's mission

Stop asking which format is better. Start asking what each one is for.

September was carousels β€” depth, saves, and the people already watching you. It worked. October keeps every bit of that and adds ten Reels on top, because reach and engagement are two different jobs and the data is clear that one format cannot do both.

Three posts a week. Reels on the days in between. Stories every single day. That's the whole rhythm, and the Content page already has all of it built, in order, with the captions written.

Send us your insights and we'll tell you.

Every account is different. Send us a few screenshots of your Instagram insights β€” reach, views, saves and shares from the last 90 days β€” and we'll look at what's actually working on your account and tell you the carousel-to-Reel ratio to run this month. No charge, it's part of your membership.

What the data actually says

Real numbers, published this year

4Γ—

9Γ—
Carousels vs. single image β€” saves
βˆ’31.7%

+203%

Single-image posts are the format actually in decline.

Reach down 21.96%, interactions down 25.41%, engagement down 45.98% year over year. If a post can be a carousel, make it a carousel.

Metricool 2026 Instagram Study β€” 24.4 million posts, 375,118 accounts

Hashtags are costing you views.

Posts using hashtags saw 31.70% fewer views and 33.89% fewer interactions than the platform average. Keywords in the caption do the job hashtags used to β€” which is exactly how the Vault captions are written.

Metricool 2026 Instagram Study Β· Hootsuite: β€œsocial SEO reigns supreme”

Asking for a comment is the highest-leverage thing in your caption.

Posts with a question got 36.70% more comments. Posts with a comment-based CTA got 202.78% more. Every Vault caption opens with one β€” that's not a style choice.

Metricool 2026 Instagram Study

Shares are the signal Instagram itself keeps naming.

Watch time, likes, and sends per reach are the ranking signals Adam Mosseri has confirmed. β€œSend this to the person you'd call first” beats β€œdouble tap if you agree,” every time.

Hootsuite, Instagram algorithm guide, 2026

Story replies are up 88% year over year.

Stories have quietly become the DM machine. Keep them to about five slides β€” view rates drop after that β€” and put a question sticker on one of them.

Instagram is still where your clients find you.

62% of agents use Instagram for business, and 46% name social media as their single best source of high-quality leads β€” ahead of MLS leads on quality.

Where the experts disagree

Three real arguments, and our call

These studies do not all say the same thing. Here's exactly where they split, so you can decide for yourself instead of taking anyone's word for it.

1. Reels or carousels?

Metricool: Reels drive more than four times the interactions of a single image, and watch time doubled year over year.
Buffer: carousels win on engagement rate β€” 6.90% median vs. 3.31% for Reels. Per person reached, carousels earn about 109% more engagement than Reels.
Buffer again, other direction: Reels get 1.36Γ— the reach of carousels and 2.25Γ— the reach of a single image.
Our call: both are right, they're just measuring different things. Reels are a reach tool β€” they put you in front of people who have never heard of you. Carousels are a conviction tool β€” they go deep with people who already have. Judge a Reel on views and shares. Judge a carousel on saves and comments. Never compare them to each other on one number. And if you want the ratio for your account rather than the average one, send us your insights β€” we'll read them with you.

2. How often should you post?

Buffer: accounts that post more tend to perform better, and there's a real penalty for going quiet for weeks at a time.
Metricool: brands published 24.04% more this year and views rose 26.56% β€” roughly proportional, meaning more posts got more total views, not better ones.
Every study is silent on the thing that actually matters: whether you can keep it up in month three.
Our call: three posts a week plus daily Stories, which is exactly what the October calendar is built on. More than that is only better if the quality holds. Never posting for two weeks is the one thing the data says will actually hurt you.

3. When should you post?

Metricool: 6–9 PM is the peak window, 8 PM the single best hour. Carousels do best Sunday 7–9 PM. Reels, oddly, get the most views posted around midnight β€” because almost nobody posts then.
Buffer: 6–9 PM weekdays, but their peak is Thursday at 9 AM.
Both are global averages across millions of accounts β€” neither is your audience.
Our call: don't take either study's word for it β€” Instagram already told you. Open Insights β†’ Audience β†’ Follower active times, tap through each day, and read the line underneath: β€œwhen followers are most active.” Post inside those windows. Then test one window outside them for the month, because that chart only knows the people already following you. After four weeks you'll have something better than any study: your own data.
The rhythm

What goes out, and when

DayWhatWhy
MondayCarouselDepth and saves to start the week. Educational or local.
TuesdayReelReach. New people who have never seen your name.
WednesdayCarouselThe mid-week one that answers a real client question.
ThursdayReelPersonality. The one that gets sent to a friend.
FridayCarouselLocal, seasonal, weekend-useful. Highest share rate of the week.
Every dayStories, 3–5 slidesReplies are up 88% year over year. This is where the DMs start.

The October calendar on the Content page already has every one of these assigned to a date, in order, with captions written. You are filling in blanks, not inventing a plan.

Four weeks

The Plan

Week One Β· September 29 – October 4Set the rhythm

Batch it once so the month runs itself.

The agents who post all month are the ones who did the work in one sitting on a Sunday. This is that sitting.

  • Open the Content Vault and pick your first two weeks from the October calendar. They're already in posting order.
  • Customize the captions β€” your city, your neighborhood, your numbers. The {} fields are the only work.
  • Schedule them. Pull your windows from Insights β†’ Audience β†’ Follower active times β€” not from a blog.
  • Save the trending audio on every Reel you plan to film, before it cools off.
  • Post Autumn in {City} on October 1 and turn Stories on the same day.

If you only do one thing: schedule two weeks in one sitting. Everything else this month depends on it.

Week Two Β· October 5–11Film

Shoot five Reels in one afternoon.

Not five days of filming. One afternoon, five clips, filmed where you already are.

  • Film b-roll at a listing you're already in β€” details, light, slow pans. It feeds four of this month's Reels.
  • Put your face in at least one. Watch time is a ranking signal and faces hold it.
  • Hook in the first three seconds, every time. If it isn't there, the rest doesn't matter.
  • Keep them under 30 seconds this month. Watch time averages 8.5 seconds β€” earn the rest.
  • Post your first two Reels and watch shares, not likes.

If you only do one thing: film the b-roll. One afternoon covers half the month.

Week Three Β· October 12–18Engage

The comment section is the job this week.

A comment CTA drives 203% more comments β€” but only if you answer them. An unanswered comment section teaches people not to bother.

  • Answer every single comment within a few hours, with a sentence, not an emoji.
  • Reply to 10 DMs like a human. The ones that start with a comment keyword are warm leads.
  • Comment on 10 local accounts β€” the coffee shop, the school fundraiser, the neighborhood page.
  • Put a question sticker on a Story and answer every reply.
  • Post one thing that asks to be sent to someone. β€œSend this to the person who…” is a reach strategy.

If you only do one thing: answer every comment for seven straight days and watch what happens to the next post.

Week Four Β· October 19–31Read the numbers

Score it against your own data, not a study.

You now have four weeks of both formats. This is the week you stop guessing.

  • Pull views, shares and saves for every October post. Reels: views and shares. Carousels: saves and comments.
  • Compare your posting windows against Follower active times again β€” that chart moves as your audience grows.
  • Find your top three posts and write down what they have in common. That's your November plan.
  • Post the Halloween Reel on the 31st and the Halloween carousels before it.
  • Pin your best three posts to the top of your profile before anyone new lands there.

If you only do one thing: find the one thing your top three posts share. That sentence is worth more than every study on this page.
